Where We Come From
Nestled in the heart of historic Grass Valley, California, Grass Valley Brewing Company is rooted in a community shaped by Gold Rush history, breathtaking Sierra foothill landscapes, and a vibrant culture of art, innovation, and local pride.
Our story began with four families: Chad & Heidi Wingo, Matt & Erin Kinney, Thomas & Carah Rogers, and Chris & Alexa DeSena. We first met as parents of preschool classmates, and what started as school friendships grew into lifelong bonds. Through years of camping trips, family adventures, and celebrating life's milestones together, we built the friendships that would eventually inspire something bigger.
It was during those gatherings that Tom Rogers' passion for craft beer and homebrewing sparked an idea: what if downtown Grass Valley had its own craft brewery once again? A place where friends, neighbors, and visitors could gather over exceptional beer, great food, and genuine hospitality. That dream became Grass Valley Brewing Company.
In many ways, we were continuing a story that began more than 150 years earlier. Grass Valley's original brewery was established in 1861 by Johann David Binkleman, a German immigrant who worked as both a miner and baker before purchasing an interest in the brewery in 1856. Located at 217 North Auburn Street; now the site of Courtyard Suites, that brewery served the community throughout the Gold Rush era. Remarkably, its original hand-dug beer cellar still exists today, serving as a reminder of Grass Valley's rich brewing heritage.
After years of planning, hard work, and more than a few challenges, Grass Valley Brewing Company opened its doors in the summer of 2018. The community's response exceeded every expectation. From the very beginning, our taproom became known as "Grass Valley's Living Room". We strive to be a welcoming place where everyone feels at home.
That sense of community has always been at the heart of who we are. Our mission extends beyond brewing great beer and serving delicious food. We believe in supporting local businesses, partnering with community organizations, and giving back to the nonprofits that make Nevada County such a special place. The strength of our community is what inspires us, and we're proud to be a part of it.
Like so many small businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic tested us in ways we never imagined. Thanks to the creativity of our original kitchen partner, Sean Cox of Roost Kitchen, the kitchen quickly transformed into a community grocery pickup service, providing baking supplies, meats, and other essentials when they were needed most. Meanwhile, our taproom remained open for beer to go, offering four-packs, growler fills, and kegs to help keep spirits high during uncertain times. The incredible support from our customers and neighbors made all the difference, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who helped us weather that storm.
Today, Grass Valley Brewing Company continues to be a place where friends gather, families celebrate, and visitors experience the best of our community. Stop in for one of our award-winning craft beers, a delicious meal, or one of our handcrafted cocktails. During the summer, don't miss our Smokin' Weekends featuring barbecue specialties from Head Chef Tom Maritz.
Whether you're relaxing with friends, bringing the family, or stopping by with your four-legged companion in our dog-friendly Brew House seating area, you'll always find a warm welcome waiting for you.
cheers,
